"Mob supplies, get your angry mob supplies here!" - Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit

Super bad day yesterday. I rained here so the roads were all slick and I hydro-planed twice. Almost hit a car and when I say almost I mean it must have been less than an inch away, I was so frickin' scared I'd get into a wreck. Then on my way to get supper my car ran out of gas. I could barely get enough gas from a nearby station to barely start my car took me five tries to get it to turn on. Heres hoping tomorrow is better.

Hills Have Eyes - 7.5 - I haven't seen the original, and it didn't really scare me at all. I wish I had some people to go see these movies with in the theater, but it was very well done I thought for what was given to them. The plot seemed a little thin, but the actors played the parts well and the special effects were great.

Must Love Dogs - 7 - Casey was right that this was not up to par with the other John Cusack movies, and I think one of the reasons is that it focuses more on the woman. Not that thats a bad thing, but the story was sort of a stock plot.

Saw II - 8.5 - I thought it was a great follow-up to the first film and while it does not achieve the same level of greatness it still brings its own uniqueness to the table. Special effects were great and I cannot wait for the third.

Mirrormask - 7.9 - The animation and special effects are amazing. The story is a little wierd for me but I think it would work much better if I was a little kid, which I think this is aimed at. It is essentially a coming of age story shown through the beautifully created world of the main character.

Shopgirl - 5.7 - I can't say my expectations didn't play a role in it because they marketed it as a struggle of love for the main woman between two men, which is absolutely not true. The story is completely one sided with her trying to not be lonely. Mildly enjoyable but not recommended.

Simone - 8 - A computer generated actress that the entire world believes to be true and can't admit that they had been tricked. A delightful comedy that while it is far-fetched it makes you bypass the whole crazyness and enjoy it.

"I thought you knew my Algebra was all Razmatazzed." - Bubblegum Tate, Futurama

This one goes out to Casey.

Man on Fire - 8 - Just badass. Great action and great plot, well played out, great special effects / cinematography. Highly recommended.

The Constant Gardner - 7.5 - Another really good movie with an intricate plot. More drama than action, but very well done. Highly recomended for those of the Drama persuasion.

Miss Congeniality 2 - 6 - It had its funny moments, but the plot was a little strained and convoluted. 'Nuff said.

Top Gun - 8 - It's a classic. If you have not seen it, go watch it. Remember when Tom Cruise was good.

Domino - 8.5 - A pretty awesome action film and what else does it have you might ask? Naked Kiera Knightley.

Aeon Flux - 8 - If you liked the show, you will love this. But most people didn't watch the show. It is very true to the original story, while trying to make it accesable to the general public. Probably not for most people though due to the uniqueness of the elements in the film.

Hoodwinked - 5.5 - Crappy animation. A slightly good plot. Somewhat humorous. Predictable.

King of Comedy - 6.8 - Chinese. Stephen Chow does a great job of being funny in a mediocre plot.

"My name is Domino Harvey. I am a bounty hunter." - Domino

Dark Water - 6.5 - It was more creepy than scary.
Cry Wolf - 6.5 - The whole trying to guess who done it was the best part.

My Neighbor Totoro - 7.5 - A great family film.
Pom Poko - 8.7 - Absolutely hilarious.
Whisper of the Heart - 7.7 - A heart-warming and beautiful story.

Rent - ? - I don't know if I can properly rate it because I was distracted watching it. I may watch it again later but for now what I can gather I'll give it 7.

Just Like Heaven - 7.5 - Great little twist into the romantic comedy.
A Lot Like Love - 8 - Damn good. One minor qualm but it I didn't even think about it until after the movie was over so it should be more like 8.5.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - 8.5 - Just random and great. They need to make the sequel(s).
Dr. Strangelove - 6.5 - I must admit that the reason it didn't appeal to me must have been because a lot of the jokes were over my head, or I didn't have the knowledge of what actually happened during that time period to know they were making fun of it.
Saving Face - 7.5 - Quite good and funny throughout but not for everyone.
Ellie Parker - 7.9 - If you stop tryig to think about the movie it becomes very comedic.
Happy Endings - 7 - Don't know what to say about this.
Fun with Dick and Jane - 6.5 - Not quite what I was expecting, but it was slightly humorous.

The Weather Man - 6.9 - A drama/ comedy that surprisingly works. But the plot was a little slow and while the end was nice it didn't really satisfy me.

Kingdom of Heaven - 7.8 - I thought it was pretty good.
A History of Violence - 8 - I watched the movie before reading the graphic novel, and it really did do it justice.
L4yer Cake - 8.3 - The intrigue was superbly done. Though the end I don't know about. I think I'd have to read the book.

Memoirs of a Geisha - 9 - Simply a masterpiece.
Kinsey - 5 - What can I say, it was really good at certain points but then it could become just sick.
Crash - 9 - Another masterpiece. Watch it. Now.
Monster - 7.5 - My mom described it like it was going to be this disgusting horror, but even though it was a true story it just wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Though the acting was magnificent. I see why she won an academy award.

"So long and thanks for all the fish." - The Dolphins, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Just doing quick reviews for now. Apperantly I have like 20 or so to do. I can do more in depth if you want me to.

Get Shorty - 7.5 - Okay, based on a novel. This author has at least 3 books made into movies including the next one "Be Cool" and "The Big Bounce." Its funny and has some mystery and noir ish stuff going on. the comedy detracts from the whole darkness that comes with the style so it doesn't get higher because its basically two different almost opposite art forms coming together.

Be Cool - 7.5 - Same as above, but more comedic and the plot is a little less cohesive.

Melinda & Melinda - 5 - This movie tries to put two different situations into either a comedy or drama, switching back and forth between the two. And it works beautifully. The intent is fully realized, but the reason for the 5 is because it just fails. You can't make a serious drama be funny or vise versa. By mixing the two with parallel opposite genres it fails. Hmmmm, I didn't realize it til now but I guess I'm saying that Get Shorty and Be Cool have a similar regard, but then they didn't do two stories at once.

"Actually you can't watch words, its liking hearing color, haha hahaha." - Rusty, Mad TV

Just got Domino (Keira Knightley, Christopher Walken, Lucy Liu), Rent (A majority of the original members of the broadway play), and The Weather Man (Nicholas Cage).

Secondhand Lions - 8 - A sweet happy drama starring Haley Joel Osment and the two guys who play his uncles. Craziness, but fun craziness, ensues when he is dropped off to live with them. Apperantly they have a butt load of money so they have some fun with it.

Running Scared - 5.5 - This action film started off pretty good and spiraled downward. I give it this high of a rating because it was kind of enjoyable. It was the action and violence that carried it all the way though. About 30 to 45 minutes into it the plot goes out of control and tries to become larger than it can be, causing a deflation of understanding in the viewer. I would say this is about 20 to 30 minutes too long as well. The end was too drawn out and a whole portion of the film could have been cut and the tone would have been much better. As for the cinemetography, it looks like they tried to do something new like Sin City but failing and to make up for that they put in odd angles and a little rewinding, which worked in some instances and was horrible in others. Only watch this movie if you want to see violence and nothing more.

Failure to Launch - 8.3 - This romantic comedy was absolutely fun. While yes the plot was basically just a rehash of other romantic comedies (Couch How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days Cough), but it was hilarious. I would say the romance is average due to the romance seen in many other films, but the comedy was the kicker. I was laughing all the way through due to a little bit of oddness, the animals, and the situation, living with parents. Other characters contribute much with varying personalities and compatability. More comedy than romance, but a great movie if you're looking for both.

"Are you too good for your home?" - Happy Gilmore

Date Movie - 7 - Following in the footsteps of Not Another Teen Movie and Scary Movie, Date Movie obviously gives a comedic spin on the whole romance genre by cramming in a lot of material from dozens of films. If you can point out all of them you should be in really good shape and enjoy the movie more. As for others, well they might be overwhelmed by the many random elements thrown in by said movies as well as other recent non-romantic movies, such as Kill Bill and Dodgeball, but I found it rather enjoyable. The acting was done well for the parts played, though not all the characters are appeasing the only ones that matter are the main three, who are great. Good for just relaxing and having some laughs, don't think just enjoy.

Walk the Line - 8.5 - This film about Johnny Cash was a very good portrayal of the late singer. While I've never learned much about Cash from what I understand Phoenix's acting was dead on. But as with many other biographical movies(Ray, Aviator), I can't say I want to watch it again anytime soon. What can I say? It was great, but thats not always enough to make a person watch a movie.

Arrested Development - 10 - One of, if not the best comedies of all time. The level of humor brought to the table in this show is absolutely amazing. The story progresses with interesting twists and turns while still keeping everything in perspective. Plus the input of ironic material pertaining to events that occur within the whole Fox cancellation buildup was absolutley genius. There are so many witty allusions hidden that everytime you understand a new one the show just gets that much better.

"Fuckabees." - Dawn Campbell, I Heart Huckabees

You know those idiots out there? Yeah, I hate them, especially when they are students here.

Got Red Eye.

Blade Runner - 6.3 - What started out as a damn good sci-fi movie it fell hard at the end. These clones have a predetermined life expectancy and they escape their "imprisonment" to go to earth and find the scientists who made them in order to extend their lives. In comes Ford as the blade runner to capture these illegals. When he starts he has come out of retirement and begins his search in a classic detective fashion while still incorporating science fiction. Its great until about three quarters of the way through in which the main antagonist flips out of character and destroys the mood created through the major poriton of the film. For sci-fi fans I recommend it but not others. I will try to read the book it is based on to see how different it is.

Going the Distance - 6.9 - A straight to video National Lampoon's movie, which usually signifies the opposite of the really good movies they put out, but it turned out to be pretty good. While it does contain mostly elements we've seen before in other road trip type movies it does present the story in a somewhat new way of the main character going to a music awards show to propose to his "girlfriend" even though it is abundantly clear that everyone hates her. And classicly he falls for a new girl on the way, accompanied by his friends, so hilarity ensues.

Waiting... - 8.7 - A different take on the more obscene comedies, which is quite refreshing considering all the copies of crap people keep making. Most of and all the main actors perform excellently, while a couple are a little over the top, but they do not disctract too much from the antics that go on in and out of the resuraunt. It has a minor storyline to give the film some cohesiveness and not leave it a jumble of crazy stories of the resturaunt. Ryan Reynolds seems to be typecast more and more, but I hope he can break out of it due to him being 30 in October. We'll see with the upcoming 5 films he's gonna be in this year (according to imdb).

"Plus it was mostly Kif's fault." - Zap

Well, I just watched one long Curling game for the Olyimpics. The Japs eventually one in an extra End. Dang. Well, just got Grey's Anatomy s1, and I have some movies that I need to watch if anyone is interested, they are: Just Like Heaven, Happy Endings, Jackie Brown, Top Gun, Monster, Secondhand Lions, The Breakfast Club, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Kingdom of Heaven, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Just let me know.

Superman - 7.5 - While this movie is revered as being absolutely amazing, I just don't see it. While I did find the acting on the good guys' parts excellent, I absolutely hated Luthor and his cohorts' performances and the plot idea of Luthor. I understand the special effects weren't amazing back then but I thought they were very good even for the times, so the problem... the writers. I mean James Bond had been out for well over a decade so we know there could have been something damn good made for Superman. Plus the beginning was too long even though they did set it up for Superman II.

Fever Pitch - 7.8 - I really liked this film. The second film based on the same book, and it received better marks than the first. A lot of People don't like Jimmy Fallon, but his performance in this movie was great. He has a different type of humor, very witty. Obviously in movies we aren't going to see his screw-ups. Drew was also very good and a great compliment to Jimmy's performance. A great romantic comedy. I highly recommend it.

Ice Princess - 7 - I got this because I like the actress and because its disney, expecting a great movie like Princess Diaries ( I don't know why), but it was a completely different kind of film even. The romance is much more downplayed and they seemingly replaced it with the skating which is fine. I love watching ice skating, and while it is a good film I don't know if I recommend it for everybody. I guess if you have some freetime go ahead and see it.

Something that really pissed me off today: I found out one of the people in my fiction writing class used one of his previous papers for his story. Thats basically plagiarising your own work.
It just seriously pisses me off.

Transporter 2 - 5 - wow. You know, I don't mind physics defying stunts and the like but when an airplane does something like it did in this movie then something is wrong. The movie was going great until near the end. It seemed like they didn't have any time left so they just threw some stuff in at the end.

The Cave - 2 - wow again. I don't even know why I wanted to watch this in the first place. The concept seems good in the pre-production phase, but with the scenery changes, the outrageous parasites, and less than great acting this movie was crap.

The Lost Boys - 3.7 - Why was this movie rated so highly on Netflix. Once I saw it was directed by Joel Schumacher I was dissapointed that I rented this. The overall concept seems somewhat interesting until you meet the main characters of this wannabe vampires in orange county film. The acting is atrocious and the theme song was just freaky. Just plain creepy, only die hard fans of wierd 80's ness will like this one.
(Goonies was not wierd.)

movies from over the break part 3

City of God - 8.5 - I have to agree with the critics on this one. This movie is the fantastic story of a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro where violence, crime, and drugs run rampant. This movie is based on true events which I have to say makes me sad that there are so many bad things in this world, but just watch it. The story is compelling and very well done. When the director goes to give background, the scenes flow much better than in Y Tu Mama Tambien. The narrator is not always the focus but ends up being it in the end, and at some points he seems to know more than he should, but by talking to the right people he could find out what happened later on. Overall, I highly recommend it.

Meet Joe Black - 8 - Ah, Death has come to be in flesh. A little slow throughout the movie. (3 hours long) I think they could have cut at least a half hour, perhaps more. But other than that, it seems to be pretty original with every event lending to the development of the characters and the plot. The end almost threw me, but I liked it. Though it did leave me wondering what would happen afterwards because everyone knew this guy as Joe.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason - 6.5 - Much rehashing of the first movie. It's still enjoyable and some of it is new, but some of the jokes and plot elements were done over. If you're a fan of the original go ahead and watch it, just don't expect anything as good as the first.

Magnolia - 8 - Another 3 hour movie, but this one had a lot more meat if you will. The acting was superbly done, as were the conections between the characters. This movie plays on the whole are coincidences really coincidences. If you like that kind of thing (everything has a meaning) then you should love this movie because the actions of one person change the outcome for everyone. Thinking about it, I think I like it very much despite its length.

Eulogy - 6.7 - A funny little film with a quirky famliy dealing with the death of the family patriarch. You should recognize most of the actors. They did a good job of displaying the crazyness of the family. of course there is a twist at the end, but I saw it coming. (Maybe I have seen this movie years ago on tv or something) Anyway, an all right film, don't expect anything special.

American Splendor - 5 - I didn't like it, I didn't dislike it. I definitely do not recommend it though. Nothing much happens except this guys life, which isn't much. He is a comic book writer of the underground comic, you guessed it, American Splendor. While this comic is just now getting more popular, it took Harvey all his life to get there. Eh well.

The last two were actually before the break I just never got around to putting them up.

Movies from over the break part 2

Chocolat - 7.8 - Both Drama and Comedy are greatly present with a pinch of Romance added in. What makes this film really good is that with trying to do so many things it still succeeds and doesn't overextend itself. A film about change and tolerance within a small town through chocolate.

Sxteen Candles - 7.3 - Two days in the life of this one girl where many things happen i.e. her birthday, her sister's wedding, a school dance, and getting a boyfriend. While this would seem to be too much for a 90 minute film, the acting and characters are whimsical and loving enough to ignore the faults of the film and enjoy it.

American Graffiti - 8 - A George Lucas film that was the first "last day in the life our group of friends" from what I can tell. Were there any before this one? Anyway, four friends a nerd, a street racer, a college boy, and a college boy afraid to go to college. The latter two switch roles by the end. Through this one night we see who the people are and what their relationship is to one another. We even get the later in life this happens to this charter and so on. While the movie did have to switch scenes many times this movie gets mad props for creativeness.

Shall We Dance? - 6.5 - This is the original Japanese version not the remake. From what I can tell, the Japanese have a hard time making a serious yet funny movie, so this film became more of a drama, while the new version is placed in the Comedy section by Netflix. Anyway its a little slow and for one long time we don't even see the family. It was kind of wierd that way, and while it caught my interest easily enough it wasn't madly enticing.

Y Tu Mama Tambien - 4 - At some points I either loved it or hated it. I was kind of still deciding right up until the end, which I hated, so I gave it a bad rating. There is a really great review on Netflix about this movie, which made me watch the movie while still keeping in mind what if this movie were in America. It was more or less correct about the movie though. The way it described the history of some of the people was stupid and annoying, some of it served no purpose. Some critics says it pushes the sexual envolope but I would say not really because it is a foreign film and American officials are very sexually repressed and can't stand the sight of it in film. While there were some very funny pieces in the film, those moments of brilliance are clouded by the idiocy of the rest of the film.

"Merry Christmas!" - Santa Claus

Yeah yeah it's a little late, but oh well. Be back at school soon.

Movies from over the break part 1

Fast Times at Ridgemont High - 7.7 - A fun classic movie about the events of high school in the early eighties. It's accurate enough for people to relate to and still have fun watching it. If you have not seen this then you need to.

The Burbs - 5 - A Tom Hanks movie. While it sounded somewhat humorous in the summary I have to say it did not live up to it. The humor is too over the top for the plot to be anywhere near believable. Only for die hard Tome Hanks fans

In the Mood for Love - 8 - I can see how many would not like this movie. It's a little slow, but thats how it is in a lot of Asian films. It started out very confusing to where I thought I wouldn't be able to understand it by the end, but everything cleared up extremely nicely. A very good look into perhaps not Asian lives but their lifestyle.

Warriors of Heaven and Earth - 7.2 - If the supernatural element hadn't been introduced so late I would have liked it better, but it seemed to come out of nowhere. It was somewhat confusing, but this also was cleared up.

True Romance - 6.5 - The image of the main character at the beginning and for pretty much the rest of the movie is really different, but aside from that it was okay. I wouldn't say it has a definite genre. It spread itself thin trying to please too many people.

Natural Born Killers - N/A - I started this film and about 5 minutes into it I had to stop. The cinemetography was absolutely atrocious. I fast forwarded to see if the rest of the movie was like that and it was. One billion thumbs way down.

Robots - 6.5 - The plot has been rehashed since time began. Other than that its a really fun kids flick. The whole robots idea was a fun new twist, which is why I gave it a good score, but other than that, meh.

Madagascar - 7 - The plot was completely unique, which was great. The CG was a little too blocky in my opinion, but it worked for this film I guess (It has talking animals, duh). If you haven't seen the Penguins Christmas short on the dvd you need to.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - 9 - Just because it is a very popular story does not mean it will be a great movie. The fact that this movie gets such a high rating is because it stayed true to the source material. When you really think about it, many things are not explained nor justified. Where does this magical world come from? Where did the Witch come from? How can they transport through the Wardrobe? One might say read The Magician's Nephew but that book was written five years after the LWW. But let us forget those questions and concetrate on everything else. The acting was top notch with each person acting the character's personality to the tee, though I did have a few minor qualms with a couple of scenes. The fact that the book is so short allowed to be translated to film well, giving an almost 100% straight from the pages story, but the changes made did not affect the overall story therefore I accept them. The makeup was well done but I felt that with today's technology for special effects that the CG characters and the blue screen backgrounds were just not good enough. Lord of the Rings was done 2-5 years ago and I felt that was better. But I still give this movie a nine.

Note- After writing each of at least the first five books in this series Lewis did not believe he would write any more.
If you haven't read the books but are planning to, I say go watch the movie.

"It's dead week and I'm about dead."

Thanksgiving was an average Thanksgiving. Good food, good wine, an overall above average day but nothing spectacular. This week I concentrate on my final paper.

The Recruit - 7.5 - A spy action movie with some good plot points, and good acting. But some of it seemed to move too fast in the last half. Reminiscent of Bourne Identity.

Master and Commander - 4 - While it was a good story and probably a great book, it did not seem to make a good movie. Some of the scenes just seem to come out of nowhere and it felt as if some scenes were missing. They did good with the setting and physical makeup of the film but it just wasn't anything good.

Flight of the Phoenix - 6.7 - Now this movie was pretty good. Especially seeing as they were able to put so much action into this kind of movie. The plane crashes in the Gobi Desert and they are supposed to survive out there, and they get the brilliant idea to make a new plance out of the old one. This seems boring at first, but it really has a good plot. That said I do not recommend this film.

Just Friends - 7.3 - I don't know why some people don't care for this movie. True it wasn't the best but it was a good romantic comedy. The characters are outlandish enough to be funny in a not stupid kind of way. I don't know if it's worth $7.50 maybe not even 5.50 but it's worth watching.

Great time last night.

Amytiville Horror - 6.5 - Its just really hard to make a good horror these days. Jeff says it was the music that helped out in the original. I guess I'll have to check that out when I get the chance. It had good potential, but there is one huge question saying "Why don't you leave now?!"

White Noise - 7 - Had a few jumps to this. I like how its based on real ideas and theories. Of course there was something missing at the end kind of. You'd have to see it.

Dark City - 7 - A little different when it comes to sci-fi. The special effects are pretty good, though part of the whole story seemed a little far-fetched even for the abilities of the aliens. More of a Noir Sci-Fi.

Ong Bak - 5.5 - This movie only gets this much because of the fighting. Thats all the movie is thats good. The plot is horrible. The acting is almost horrible. The replay clips got old fast. Really if you like martial arts movies this should be good for you but don't expect anything good except for the action.

Waking Life - 7 - A visually stunning movie. An animation layed over real film allows this realistic movie to show things slightly unrealistic. An existential and philosophical movie thats asks questions concerning life and all things abound.

Being John Malkovich - 8.7 - A hilarious movie where people get to experience the life of Malkovich. You don't know what to expect at the beginning with these characters, but as time continues a plot develops into a storyline. The relationships were a little wierd, but that made the end even more strange, though I think without that end it would have been that great.

Nothing spectacular happening right now. I really hate Eng 470.

I gave Firefly the sereies an 8.5 - on that note my review

Serenity - 9 - This movie is an excellent sci-fi adventure. It is quite refreshing to see the sci-fi genre come through with a kick ass movie. Now I do have to say that I might not have given this a 9 if not for the series. There are a few things one might not know if he or she doesn't watch the show. However, It is still enjoyable by far. The pace is constant throughout, giving good time to every aspect. the director does take a few liberties with the characters. Rather than introducing them slowly and building them up he speeds it (I would say mainly due to the fact that there is a series). And there were a few modifications given to the movie from the show. A couple of enhancements if you will. But I think if he had the money to do that in the show he would have, so I accept them easily. I did have one minor qualm but that is mainly because a question from the series didn't get answered. I highly recommend this movie. It is fresh and delightful.

If you do watch the show and the movie you might wonder how they got from one to the other. Answer: there is a three part comic book series to bridge the gap and paves the way for the movie. (Yes I do have these for anyone who wants to read them.)
